LOVE the beef curry here. though would like ability to add some vegetables e.g. spinach or broccoli just to be more healthy for more $ though the salad that comes with it is WOW, so yummy and generous portion. got the garlic edamame, also yummy service is always nice like the TV being on a cooking show. ramen is good too

Was here for an early lunch. Maybe because a storm was coming, we got a table immediately. I ordered a lunch special with spicy tonkotsu ramen and chicken karaage. Food was okay though it's one of the few places I'd been to with the chili oil. It's a relatively small place and was quiet while we were there.

Let's start with the service, impeccable! The server Baran is kind and hospitable, Well versed with their menu. The chef in the counter has a welcoming smile. The location is in a street that's intentionally blocked to accommodate consumers to avail at least 2 dozens of restaurant well equipped to compete in hopes it gain the business of the public. The parking is free for 2 hours few meters away. The food, we the basic karaage and the gyoza before we had our tankutso and spicy Ramen. All them were good is not better than the competition within the area. Highly recommend it when your in palo alto

Total commitment to the kraft of making great ramen. The owner actually served us, engaged us in conversation and provided that little extra flair of joy on the quiet night we were there. We had the Vegetarian broth with mushrooms, green onions, ginger and bamboo shoots. I loved the flavor of the broth, veggies were fresh and beautifully placed in the bowl and the egg noodles were perfectly aldente. The night was warm, we sat outside and the whole thing was delightful. Lanterns, twinkly lights, and everything was delightful.
Ramen Kowa Palo Alto - Authentic Japanese Noodles in California Avenue
Ramen Kowa is more than just a spot for a quick bite—it's an experience that captures the essence of authentic Japanese ramen. Nestled at 445 S California Ave in Palo Alto, this cozy ramen shop has become a beloved destination for both locals and visitors. The allure of Ramen Kowa lies not just in its mouthwatering dishes but in its ability to transport diners to the heart of Japan with every bowl.
A Taste of Japan in Palo Alto
Ramen Kowa is all about authenticity. From the moment you step through the door, you're greeted by the savory aroma of simmering broth that tells you this is a place that takes ramen seriously. The chefs at Ramen Kowa have honed their craft, drawing on years of experience to create a menu that celebrates the rich, complex flavors of traditional Japanese ramen.
The broth, the cornerstone of any good ramen, is prepared meticulously. Each bowl starts with a base that has been slowly simmered for hours, extracting deep flavors from bones, vegetables, and spices. Whether you opt for the tonkotsu (pork bone broth), shoyu (soy sauce-based broth), or miso, you can be sure that each sip will be a burst of umami goodness.
Ramen Kowa's Signature Dishes
One of the standout dishes at Ramen Kowa is their Tonkotsu Ramen. This dish is a symphony of flavors, featuring a rich, creamy broth that clings perfectly to the thin, springy noodles. The chashu pork—slow-braised until it’s melt-in-your-mouth tender—adds a luxurious touch, while the perfectly cooked ajitama (marinated soft-boiled egg) offers a velvety contrast to the broth's richness.
Another favorite among patrons is the Shoyu Ramen. This dish is a lighter alternative, with a clear, savory broth that highlights the delicate balance of soy sauce and chicken stock. The addition of fresh menma (bamboo shoots), nori (seaweed), and negi (green onions) creates layers of flavor that make each bite different from the last.
For those seeking something a bit more robust, the Spicy Miso Ramen is a must-try. The combination of fermented miso paste and a fiery chili kick makes this dish both hearty and invigorating. The miso broth, enriched with ground pork, is both comforting and satisfying, making it a perfect choice for anyone craving something with a bit more heat.
Ingredients and Craftsmanship: The Secret to Success
What sets Ramen Kowa apart from other ramen shops is its commitment to quality ingredients. The noodles, made fresh daily, have the perfect chewiness, a testament to the shop's dedication to authenticity. The broth, simmered for hours, is a labor of love, each pot yielding a depth of flavor that is hard to replicate.
Moreover, the toppings are meticulously prepared to enhance the overall experience. The chashu is cooked using a traditional method that involves slow-braising in a mixture of soy sauce, sake, and sugar, giving it a sweet-savory profile that complements the richness of the broth. The ajitama is marinated for just the right amount of time, ensuring that it is flavorful throughout while retaining its creamy yolk.

We got the spicy miso tonkatsu and shio ramen. Service was fast, as we came in here one hour before closing. The only thing I would note is that the broth of the spicy miso tonkatsu was very thick in comparison to other places which was interesting? For ambiance, really liked the decorations outside with the lanterns. Overall, not a bad choice if you just need some soup to heal after a long night!
